Wrongfully Imprisoned Man Awarded $18 Million
A New York jury has awarded $18 million to a man who was wrongfully imprisoned for more than 20 years on a rape conviction. The man, who was convicted of rape, robbery and assault in 1985 was cleared in July 2006 after DNA from a rape kit showed he was not the attacker. The plaintiff and his lawyer had been asking for the rape kit for close to ten years, and the jury found two police officers liable for intentional infliction of emotional distress for failing to produce the evidence.
