Update 11:30 a.m.: Austin police say a man has been charged with intoxication assault in connection with a fatal crash early Monday in East Austin.
The identities of the men involved in the collision has not been released.
One man died in the crash on Riverside Drive in East Austin shortly after 1 a.m., officials have said.
Officials have said two vehicles were racing early Monday, when one vehicle lost control west of Faro Drive and hit a utility pole. The man who died was a passenger in the car that hit a utility pole and the driver of the car was the man who was charged with intoxication assault, according to police.
The collision triggered the loss of power for 3,600 customers for at least an hour, an Austin Energy spokesman said. All but 20 customers saw their power restored by 3:45 a.m., said spokesman Ed Clark. He said power was restored to all customers by 1: 30 p.m. Monday.
Earlier: One person was killed when a vehicle struck a utility pole about 1 a.m. on East Riverside Drive, a police official said this morning.
It appears the man, whose identity police have not released, lost control of his vehicle near Faro Drive, left the roadway and struck the pole, the official said. Police said it is possible that the man was racing another vehicle when the crash occurred.
The crash knocked out power to about 3,600 Austin Energy customers, utility spokesman Ed Clark said. Utility crews had to replace the pole, lines and equipment, Clark said. Power has since been restored to most customers, he said.
Although police are investigating at the scene, nearby roadways are open, the police official said.
