Parents May be the Worst Examples for Teen Drivers

According to a news piece in the Sun-Sentinel, State Farm released a survey based on driving distractions that showed how parents may set the wrong example for their teen drivers. If you are involved in an accident in Texas due to another driver's inattention on the road, you should get in touch with an Austin accident attorney to protect your legal rights.

More than 500 pairs of teenage drivers and their parents contributed to the State Farm survey, which compiled the following data:

  • 61% of teenage drivers said cell phones or any other electronic device distracted their parent while teaching them how to drive;
  • 29% of teenage drivers claimed their parents were distracted sometimes, often or constantly while teaching them to drive;
  • 53% of parents confessed that they were distracted at least once while they taught their child to drive; and
  • 17% of parents confessed that they were distracted sometimes, frequently or constantly while they taught their child to drive.

Even if you've had years of driving experience, statistics show that drivers who text are 20 times more likely to cause an accident. More than half of the United States has banned drivers from texting while driving, so if you become the victim of an accident in Texas due to a distracted driver, you may be able to file a personal injury claim and fight for the compensation you deserve.
